BFME2 360 Community Summit - Xbox Live Tour
Next on the agenda was a tour of the Xbox Live building! No photos allowed, although Chris Paladino received permission to take one of Xbox milestones - first console off the line, the millionth controller, etc. I wasn't quite sure what the green Xbox was all about...
The heart of the tour was the heart of Xbox Live - the control room which is staffed 24/7 by at least three people at all times. Giant flat screen monitors on one wall tracked different critical components, such as one which had a line representing every Live server. A sudden dip in one of the lines could mean a local power outage, while a sudden dip in all of them could mean the Super Bowl. Right next door to that is a little room with a storage and retrieval system with 4+ copies of every game for the Xbox/360 in every language. If someone from Germany calls saying they can't connect to someone in the United States, the crew can quickly load up German and English versions and check for connectivity. The last stop of the tour was the server room, which is at capacity. Racks and racks of servers, with cables all over.
One surprise I had during the tour (and also back at the other Xbox building) were the number of offices. I was expecting more 'open spaces' to encourage collaboration, but except for the occasional green murals of Xbox components on the walls, they could have been almost any office buildings.
