Topic Subject: Hoax virus on site! (Or not, but better safe than sorry...)
posted 11-10-06 01:04 PM EDT (US)
Three times, I have had a pop-up on my computer warning me of the terrible danger my computer was in from viruses, and how I needed to upgrade security at once, and so on. It bore most of the hallmarks of a hoax, and it was fiendishly challenging to close the window without following any of its links. All three times were on this website - twice on the Prancing Pony, once in LOTR discussions.

It is possible that it is not connected with this website, but I'd rather not take chances. I am looking out for any sort of pattern as it shows up. (Just doing my civic duties, suh...)

I thought it neccessary for me to sound the alarm in case this has happened to many people here. If it turns up again, I'll take a note of its appearance, but for now I can say it had "[something or other]:Warning!" as its heading, looked very Windows-ish (naturally) and had a list of percentages supposedly telling me of the differences in safety before and after the upgrade.

Its better not to download the "update". Enable pop up blocker and that should stop the warnings.

Hey... sorry about that. I think I found it and disabled it. Was it much larger than the normal popups? Something about your IP being traced? If so, I killed it.

I don't ever select those on purpose, but for some reason, that one got auto-selected. I'll keep my eye out for them.

Thanks for the heads up. 8^)

He had to post here to reassure us , if it was someone like BP/Bendak telling us then people wouldn't have felt as safe.

No offence...
