Mordor 1.06 by Catabre

Mordor is a highly versatile and unique nation. They have more units than any other faction with a larger selection of buildings than any other faction. Mordor has weak, cheap, early game units and powerful, expensive late game units. Mordor also ties with the Men of the West for having the most heroes.

This guide will cover the units, buildings and powers that are available to Mordor in 1.06. It will also have some tips on microing orc warriors, and will have an early, middle and late game guide added on later.

Unit-Producing Buildings

Orc Pit

  • Mordor's cheap unit barracks.
  • 300 resources.
  • Train Orc Warriors and Orc Archers at this building.
  • Level 2 costs 500 resources. It allows you to purchase the banner carriers upgrade (Hotkey: N). It also boosts your build speed by +10%.
  • Level 3 costs 350 resources. It boosts your build speed by +25%.
  • Banner Carriers costs 600 resources. After purchased it allows you to equip your units with banner carriers making them level 2.

  • Orc Warriors

    • Mordor's cheap swordsmen unit.
    • 50 resources.
    • 50 Command Points.
    • Can be upgraded with the banner carriers upgrade.
    • Bloodthirsty
    • Strong versus resource buildings.
    • Trainable at any level 1 orc pit.
    • Hotkey: W

    Orc Archers

    • Mordor's cheap archer unit.
    • 300 resources
    • 60 Command Points
    • Can be upgraded with fire arrows
    • Bombard ground. The unit will bombard selected area of ground until told to stop.
    • Strong versus infantry.
    • Trainable at any level 1 orc pit.
    • Hotkey: A

Haradrim Palace

  • Mordor's expensive unit barracks.
  • 300 resources.
  • Train Easterlings and Haradrim Archers here.
  • Level 2 costs 500 resources. It allows you to train Haradrim Archers. It boosts your build speed by +10%.
  • Level 3 costs 350 resources. It boosts your build speed by +25%.

  • Hotkey: D
  • Easterlings

    • Mordor's only pikemen unit.
    • 300 resources.
    • 60 Command Points
    • Can be upgraded with forged blades, heavy armor and banner carriers.
    • Porcupine formation. The Easterlings will arrange themselves in a circle with their pikes facing outwards.
    • Strong versus cavalry.
    • Level 1 Haradrim Palace.
    • Hotkey: T

    Haradrim Archers

    • Mordor's elite archer unit.
    • 500 resources.
    • 60 Command Points
    • Barbed Arrows, heavy armor, banner carriers.
    • Barbed Arrows (after you purchase it). They deal heavy damage and knock the targeted units back. Bombard ground. The unit will bombard selected area of ground until told to stop.
    • Strong versus infantry and monsters.
    • Level 2 Haradrim Palace.

    Troll Cage

  • Mordor's "stable".
  • 750 resources.
  • Train Mountain Trolls, Drummer Trolls and Attack Trolls here.
  • Level 2 costs 500 resources. It allows you to train Drummer Trolls. It boosts your build speed by +10%.
  • Level 3 costs 1000 resources. It allows you to create Attack Trolls. It boosts your build speed by +25%.

  • Mountain Troll

    • The Mountain Troll is a versatile unit that can act as a cavalry or a siege unit.
    • 600 resources.
    • 50 Command Points
    • No upgrades are available for this unit.
    • Find orc. The troll will find and eat an orc to heal itself. Find rock. (this is their default mode) The troll will pick up a rock to throw at enemies. This mode is great for sieging. The trolls come out of the cage with a rock in theri hand. Find tree. The troll will pick up a tree to use as a club. If the troll has a tree in hand he cannot pick up an orc or rock again.
    • Strong versus swordsmen and buildings.
    • Level 1 Troll Cage.
    • Hotkey: M

    Drummer Troll

    • This unit has area damage like all trolls and provides a leadership bonus to nearby troops.
    • 400 resources.
    • 25 Command Points.
    • No upgrades are available for this unit.
    • This unit provides leadership to all nearby friendly units.
    • This unit is not particularly strong against any unit.
    • Level 2 Troll Cage.
    • Hotkey: D

    Attack Troll

    • Mordor's strongest non-hero unit. This expensive troll attacks with a club and will decimate all before it. Just watch out for archers and high level heroes.
    • 1100 resources.
    • 75 Command Points.
    • No upgrades are available for this unit.
    • Dominate Troll. Use this ability to take control of any troll that is hostile towards your forces.
    • Strong versus swordsmen, cavalry and buildings.
    • Level 3 Troll Cage.
    • Hotkey: T

    Siege Works

  • Mordor's siege factory.
  • 500 resources.
  • Train Battering Rams, Catapults and Siege Towers here.
  • Level 2 costs 800 resources. It allows you to train Catapults. It boosts your build speed by +10%.
  • Level 3 costs 350 resources. It boosts your build speed by +25%.

  • Battering Ram

    • Very effective against any structure. Highly resistant to arrows, yet highly vulnerable to all else.
    • 450 resources.
    • 25 command points.
    • No upgrades are available for this unit.
    • This unit does not have any special abilities.
    • Strong versus structures.
    • Level 1 Siege Works.
    • Hotkey: R

    Catapult

    • The catapult has two modes of fire. It can fire flaming shots or skulls which generate fear.
    • 400 resources.
    • 25 command points.
    • No upgrades are available for this unit.
    • Can switch ammunition. Can choose to fire either flaming shots strong against buildings and units, or can fire skulls which generate fear causing enemy units to run away. If a catapult hits a patch of ground with the skull ammo and then hits that same patch of ground with flaming ammo that patch of ground will burn like oil was placed there. Bombard ground. The unit will bombard selected area of ground until told to stop.

    Siege Tower (I remembered this unit last minute. I will flesh it out in my next update)

    • This unit can only be made on maps with fortress walls e.g. Helm's Deep, Minas Tirith.

    Mumakil Pen

  • Mordor's super-stable.
  • 1000 resources.
  • Train Mumakils and Haradrim Lancers (spear throwers) here.
  • Level 2 costs 150 resources. It boosts your build speed by +10%.
  • Level 3 costs 500 resources. It boosts your build speed by +25% and all Mumakils start at level 2.

  • Mumakil with Haradrim Lancers

    • Think giant war elephant that tramples all in its path.
    • 1800 resources.
    • 70 command points. Comes with a regiment of Haradrim Lancers mounted on the Mumakil which add another 30 command points.
    • Banner Carriers.
    • Trample. The Mumakil will charge towards enemy units and deal meta damage. Evacuate. The Haradrim Lancers that are mounted on the Mumakil disembark and become a seperate regiment. There are 6 lancers and a banner carrier per regiment. They cannot get any upgrades.
    • Strong versus structures and cavalry.
    • Level 1 Mumakil Pen.

    Tavern

  • Mordor's upgrade building and third barracks.
  • 300 resources.
  • Train Corsairs of Umbar here. Purchase the Barbed Arrows upgrade: Hotkey: B. Cost: 1000 Resources. Allows Haradrim Archers to use the barbed arrows special ability. Heavy Armor: Hotkey: V. Cost: 1000 Resources. Significantly reduces the amount of damage a battalion equipped with heavy armor takes. Forged Blades: Hoteky: L. Cost: 1000 Resources. Significantly increases the amount of damage a battalion equipped with forged blades inflicts. Fire Arrows: Hotkey: W. Cost: 650 Resources. Significantly boosts the attack power of archers who are equipped with them. Your archers will now deal fire damage in conjunction with their regular damage. Can be useful for burning down trees.
  • Level 2 costs 700 resources. It allows you to purchase the Heavy Armor and Forged Blades upgrades. It boosts your build speed by +10%.
  • Level 3 costs 500 resources. It allows you to purchase the Fire Arrows upgrade. It adds a defensive tower to the tavern. It boosts your build speed by +25% and all Mumakils start at level 2.

  • Corsairs of Umbar

    • A swordsmen unit that has great siege attack.
    • 400 resources.
    • 60 command points.
    • Can be equipped with the banner carriers upgrade and forged blades.
    • Switch Weapons. The Corsairs swith from knives to firebombs which deal fire damage and are great for sieging. Firebombs also leave the ground burning where they've hit for a short time.
    • Strong versus pikemen and structures.
    • Level 1 Tavern.

    Resource Production Buildings:

    When resource production buildings hit level 3 they acquire a defensive arrow tower.

    Slaughterhouse

  • The standard resource building that generates resources based upon available terrain. You can sacrifice Orc Laborers, Orc Warriors and Orc Archers for resources by selecting them then right clicking on the slaughterhouse. Orc laborers give 1 Resource each, Orc Warriors give 2 Resource each and Orc Archers give 8 Resources each.
  • 300 resources.
  • You train nothing at this building.
  • Slaughterhouses level depending upon the amount of resources they generate. The faster they generate resources the faster they level up.

  • Lumbermill

  • Mordor's second resource gathering building. You gather resources by creating Orc Laborers who chop down trees and bring back bundles of wood worth 10 Resource each. When you construct this building 5 Orc Laborers will immediately spawn for free upon completion.
  • 370 Resources
  • Orc Laborers.
  • Lumbermills level up by having resources deposited at them. The faster our laborers drop off their bundles of wood at the lumbermill the faster it levels up.

  • Orc Laborer

    • Used to gather wood from trees and then drop it off at a lumbermill to gather resources. They drop off 10 resources every time.
    • 20 resources.
    • 1 command point
    • There are no upgrades available for this unit.
    • This unit has no special abilites or formations.
    • This unit is not effective against anything except trees.
    • Level 1 Lumbermill
    • Hotkey: L

    Defensive Buildings:

    Battle Tower

  • Mordor's only defensive building besides the fortress.
  • 500 Resources.
  • You train nothing at the battle tower.
  • Battle Towers have no levels.
  • To up grade the Battle Tower click on the Fire Arrows button or pess the Hotkey: W.

  • Fortress Expansions:

      To make a fortress expansion click on one of the build plots next to the fortress. Here are the three types of fortress expansions for Mordor:

    Barricade Expansion

    • This is an extra arrow tower.
    • Cost: 400 Resources

    Watchers

    • This expansion generate fear and causes enemy units to flee in terror. This can be used as an effective area denial weapon.
    • Cost: 600 Resources

    Catapult Expansion

    • This is a platform with a Mordor catapult on it. As such you can seperatly select (or target and destroy) the catapult and change its ammunition.
    • Cost: 1200 Resources

    Fortress Upgrades:

      To access the fortress upgrades section select your fortress and either press U or click on the yellowish tower.

    Doom Pyres

    • This is a cheap upgrade. Nice if you have the extra resources and are using heroes heavily.
    • Effect: Hero Cost -10%, Hero Recruit Time -10%, Builder Cost -20%.
    • Cost: 500 Resources
    • Hotkey: D

      Lava Moat

    • This upgrade decreases the melee vulnerability of the fortress. If I'm spending money to upgrade my fortress, I'd much rather spend 500 more and get Magma Cauldrons.
    • Cost: 1000 resources.
    • Hotkey: V

      Flaming Munitions

    • This upgrades equips the main fortress and all barricade expansions with fire arrows.
    • Cost: 1500
    • Hotkey: F

    Magma Cauldrons

    • Look at the Palantir when you have your fortress selected to use this power. It kills all units in a fairly large radius around the fortress.
    • Cost: 1500
    • Hotkey: M

    Morgul Sorcery

    • This upgrade greatly increases the fortresses armor. It is also the pre-requisite to the Gorgoroth Spire. After the upgrade is finished researching it adds a cool greenish effect to the fortress.
    • Cost: 1600

    Gorgoroth Spire

    • This upgrade gives Mordor's fortress the ability to shoot a giant fireball. This upgrade is nice to have lategame if you need to destroy an enemy army.
    • Cost: 2500

    Units Purchased at the fortress:

      Builder

      • The builder is your "go to" unit if you want to build buildings. (duh) He can also extinguish fires.
      • 500
      • No Command points cost.
      • No upgrades are available for the builder.
      • Extinguish Fire. This power lets the builder pour water on a circular area of ground to put out any water in that area. This ability recharges incredibly quickly.
      • This unit cannot fight, thereore it is not good against anything.
      • You train the builder at the fortress.
      • Hotkey: L

      Heroes:

      No upgrades are available for heroes. To create a hero click the crown picture when you have your fortress selected. To make a hero press that hero's corresponding hotkey or click their icon.

      Nazgul (can have 3 at a time)

      • This is Mordor's cheapest hero. They are deadly effective for their price. They have a good heal rate and can heal while moving.
      • 1100 Resources
      • 40 Command Points
      • At level 1 Nazgul can mount or dismount. (horses, not fellbeasts!) Hotkey: R
      • At level 2 they earn Dread Visage. This is a passive power that significantly reduces enemy armor and damage. It also makes your Nazgul slower when they are on foot. They lose about 45%-50% of their speed.
      • At level 6 they earn the Morgul Blade power. If you use Morgul Blade on a unit that unit freezes in place aqnd takes poison damage. If the unit dies it transforms into a lesser wight ( a wight with 1 minute of time remaining). Hotkey: C
      • At level 10 Nazgul get Screech. This ability scares away all enemy units. Hotkey: V
      • The Fortress.
      • Hotkey: N

      Mouth of Sauron

      • The Mouth of Sauron is Mordor's closest thing to a support hero.
      • 2000 Resources
      • 60 Command Points
      • At level 1 Mouth of Sauron can mount or dismount. Hotkey: R
      • At level 3 he earns Evil Eye. This power shoots a ray of light at enemy units. This power is useful for killing enemy heroes. Hotkey: T
      • At level 4 he earns Doubt. Doubt significantly reduces enemy armor and damage, but is not a passive power. It has to be cast for it to take effect. Hotkey: C
      • At level 10 the Mouth of Sauron earns the Dissent power. Castthis power on enemy units to watch them turn on each other and tear themselves to shreds. Hotkey: V
      • The Fortress.
      • Hotkey: M

      Fellbeasts (can have 2 at a time)

      • Excluding the Witch-King, Fellbeasts are Mordor's only flying units. They have good siege and are useful for taking out enemy buildings. They are vulnerable to archers, especially archers with upgraded arrows.
      • 3000 Resources
      • 80 Command Points
      • At level 1 Fellbeasts have the Screech ability. This ability is the same ability the Nazgul have. It causes enemy units to flee in fear.
      • The Fortress.
      • Hotkey: F

      The Witch-King

    • The Witch-King is Mordor's most expensive hero. He pakc s a punch on the ground and in the air. He is vulnerable to arrows, especially upgraded arrows, whether airborne or grounded. He has area damage, and can quickly win battles. He is cheaper to resummon if he dies on the ground.
    • 5000 resources.
    • 100 Command Points
    • At level 1 Nazgul can mount or dismount his Fellbeast. Hotkey: R
    • At level 2 the Witch-King earns Dread Visage. This is a passive power that significantly reduces enemy armor and damage.
    • At level 6 he earns Screech. He can use this to make enemy units flee in terror. Hotkey: C
    • At level 10 he earns Hour of the Witch-King. When you this power on an enemy unit all of that enemy unit's special ability timers are set to just used. Hotkey: V
    • The Fortress.
    • Hotkey: W
    • Mordor's Palantir Power Tree:

      5 Power Points:

      Tainted Land

        This power destroys all trees in it's radius. Useful when those pesky elves keep hiding. All allied units it its area get +50% Armor.

      Eye of Sauron

        This power calls down the Eye of Sauron which is useful for scouting or boosting your troops in combat. It can reveal stealthed units (e.g. elves hiding in trees) or give units in its area +25% Damage and +25% Experience earned.

      War Cry

        The units that you use this power on gain +50% Attack.

      10 Power Points:

      Industry

        Any of your Slaughterhouses that you use this power on gain a +300% production boost for a short time.

      Untamed Alliegance

        This power lets you take over lairs. This power is worthless because of it's overpriced power point cost and it's general uselessness. Avoid this power unless you have purchased all the other powers.

      Barricade

        This is similar to the Men's and Dwarve's Lone Tower power. Barricade summons a defensive tower to fight for you until it is destroyed.

      Arrow Volley

        Arrow Volley calls down a volley of arrows in a small circular area killing all units that are in the circle. Provided they don't leave the area.

      15 Power Points:

      Barrage

        This power calls down meteors that kill most units and buildings in the area. It has a fairly large circular area and is well worth the cost.

      Darkness

        This is Mordor's weather power. When used this will cancel all other weather powers that are currently in use (Cloud Break or Freezing Rain) and darken the map. All allied units get a +25% Damage, +25% Armor, and +50% experience earned boost.

      Wyrm

        This power summons a subterranean Wyrm to fight for you. The Wyrm breathes fire and will dive underground and pop up near enemy forces to knock them back.

      25 Power Points:

      Summon Balrog

        The Balrog is extremely powerful. He can destroy armies in seconds. Remember to use Ignite immediately after you summon him. His most effective attack against buildings is his whip.

      Rain of Fire

        This power is Barrage on steroids. This is EXTREMELY effective at destroying enemy bases and armies.

      Mordor Tips and Tricks

    • If you have 100+ Orcs in a group they gain +50% Damage and +25% Speed. If you have under 100 Orcs, even just 99, then the bonus goes away. When making a major assault always group for your orcs. Your Orcs can kill cavalry by themselves, provided you don't mind microing. If Cavalry (unupgraded, non-mini hero cavalry) are charging your Orcs, put your orcs in defensive stance. As soon as they slow down put your Orcs in aggressive stance and you will either kill or mostly kill there cavalry regiment.
