Well they do, and it really undermines my ability to mod to the extent I wish.

Med2 is better, but considerably more complicated in a number of areas and I don't have it over here in Europe (well, I brought one disk, thinking 'hey, my PC isn't going to die on me, right?.' Sure enough, 2 weeks into the trip...)

Empire I understand has been much harder to mod yet again. I'm hoping they'll be returning to their roots. (Also, the ability to pick my faction heir again please!)

Ah, but once worked out there is a huuge amount that modders could do with the engine, as much if not more so than Medieval 2.

These latest games, however, do no allow modding in the way that we've all come to know and love. Some have cynically said it's so then they can get more from their DLCs (which is actually a sound business model), but it does detract from the life of the games. People will just keep going back to M2 and Rome just because there's always something new in the line.

Good ol' AoK was very difficult to mod, I understand. Total War has tended to be a series better adapted for the mod community.

My problem with Med2 is the file layout, in part - if you've ever seen the files required to mod units, you'll understand. Even once you format the file, it is much more difficult to read than RTW's.

If RTW had a faction limit of 31, like Med2, the ability to Mod AI and some of Kingdom's scripting abilities (namely general's bodyguards and the occasional event) I don't think I would ever buy another game in the genre.

We've been chatting to the makers and SEGA, yeah. Although policy is for most game developers nowadays is to develop their own forums, and throw bones out to the fansites.

Yeah, but if our fan content is good we should do well, right?

Well, it "should" help us, but it also depends on how much publicity we receive. If we receive very little, then we are doomed. Personally, I think DoFH has as potential because the developers originated here from HG However, they have a huge forum which dwarfs ours

I think most forums dwarf ours nowadays.
That's because of HG's set-up. Most forums concentrate on just the one thing, while we have the sprawl.

It could be the glacial pace of change set by the higher ups?

Though yes, the whole spread out thing tends to diversify the community, meaning entire Heavens can be left empty by a few people leaving.

I couldn't possibly comment. Though I'm sure the rate of decision making up top isn't helped at all by having all these different heavens to consider.
