The thing that sucks about here in Washington is half the colleges are all hippyish. At Evergreen they don't even give grades. I just need to find decent one that isn't like that.

I wouldn't mind no grades - I'd love it. Education should be for the sake of knowledge, not for the degree and grading system.

We've got a college like that down here in Marin County. They're kind of a joke at my school, which is telling considering I go to a freakin' community college.

We've got a college like that down here in Marin County. They're kind of a joke at my school, which is telling considering I go to a freakin' community college.
But the good part is that only the people there for an education actually graduate. If someone has been brought up with the degree and grading system, they'll go to a college like that and attend the first and second class, maybe the third and fourth. But then, they're outside obligations will begin to catch up. They'll drop a few assignments here and there, and no one will take heed. The lectures that assume they've completed the assignment will become more and more difficult, and they'll drop more assignments, and the lectures become harder. There's no one to discipline them, so they keep doing it. Eventually, they stop attending class and flunk themselves out.

Good! That's what's supposed to happen! He wasn't there for a REAL education, just a letter and a piece of paper! He'll go and, let's say, become a mechanic. He'll spend some years fixing stuff, being frustrated, learning about the engines and whatnot. Eventually, he might start thinking that he could maybe do a better job. He might even try to go back to school, learn again, to do something that he actually wants to. He'll be there for a real education. Not grades or degrees. He'll take engineering and stuff, he'll maybe take physics when he realizes he needs it, a math course, too. Eventually, he'll graduate, because this time, he was there to truly learn.

And if he doesn't? Oh well. At least he doesn't waste four years of money and energy doing something he doesn't care for in the first place.

That's the way a true school should be.

All should read Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance.

Obviously it's impossible to both want a degree worth something come employment time and want a proper education at the same time.

I wouldn't say it is impossible. You can always educate yourself to be more robust than your university major's regimen. But, I suspect a great many lack the motivation.

This. Sorry, ladies, if you can't hold a decent conversation, I'm not attracted to you.

And if you're really good at talking, I will probably be awkwardly attracted to you for far too long. So maybe not being able to is better.

Also, I made a crowning argument of awesome! yay!

EDIT: Also, I have facebook but am unsure if I want strangers adding me.

Yes. Poe's Law really comes in play. Love how they say how refreshing it is to read something without Liberal bias. Even more so is something without Conservative bias. Course for them, it's only biased if it's liberal or center right.
Oh, good. Completely corrupting anything Jesus said about morals!
Really. It's like they don't have a shred of understanding of 16th century lingo. That or they're so Rightie they consider there own God to be Communist, lol.

Don't be silly, if everybody uses it then it is of course a FAD.

This is possibly one of the wisest things Tolkien ever wrote, and yet as much as I should like to live like that, I consistently fail to carpe diem.

Incidentally, I googled that just to remind myself if it was in the original text, and stumbled across this wonderful webpage...
