I stumbled upon this little jewel of a list, with some excellent entries. Out of the hundred, I've read only twenty. I invite everyone to take a gander and see how you make out.
Really, revelation isn't that bad compared with other Christian apocalyptic books written at the time that didn't make through the editors
To be considered valid a book had to be written by either an apostle or a very, very close associate of an apostle.

No. I don't think John of Patmos was the Apostle or the Evangelist. But that's the fun thing about religion. No one can agree on it or its books. It's open to individual interpretation.
The Church Councils were very strict about what went into the finished product, and John was exiled to Patmos...

That is the prevailing myth. It can't be proven either way that there were two or three different Johns, and literature analysts are in disagreement over the way each are written and when the text was written.
Someday, when I have finally conquered my host of exams, I'm going to try to read all of the new testament apocrypha.
Although I've only read 8 books from the list (sad, I know), I have at least a decent knowledge of a good chunk of them... At least I'll now have a good reading list for the future : ) ...
