If they switch to the public option, though, the premiums will almost definitely be lower. If they stick with the regular health care insurance company, those premiums will also drop due to the public option competition. Those middle class people get lower premiums, no unexpected "you need a colonoscopy but your wrist sprain is a pre-existing condition so we're dropping your coverage" crap, and lower prices in general.
As far as a tax hike goes, Obama is only considering those for the wealthy, first of all, not middle class. I think a good level would be $500,000 for individuals and $1,000,000 for couples. Below that is still not good enough in this financial crisis, seeing as how even my family is in a good amount of debt right now.
And wasn't it the CBO which said that if the bill cuts out all the medicare waste that we have right now, the healthcare reform would support itself without a tax hike? We spend five times more than socialist countries on our healthcare system, yet we are ranked 37 by the WHO, right above Slovenia and below Costa Rica. We spend five times more and Western European countries are beating us by a good amount, the countries that Republicans bag on about being socialist. We spend five times more and we can't get healthcare to 50 million of our citizens (albeit, not all of them WANT healthcare - I'm still sure there a huge amount that do but can't afford it, and the advantages to those who have healthcare will be numerous, too). We spend five times more, and yet
Glenn Beck called our healthcare system one of the worst in the world in early 2008 when he got a colonscopy. He still had this view when off the meds and on his show! Incidentally, since then, we've actually become the country with the best healthcare system in the world now that he's forgotten that ordeal. *rolls eyes*
