Fox News. Representing right wing extremists for a long time now. Just how much do these fascist neo-Nazis really love America?

Judging by the fact that Glenn Beck removed all the stars on the Flag except two, representing Alaska and Tennessee, not very much. And who would be the first to shout that this was unpatriotic and the guy who did it was an America hater if someone else had done this? You guessed it: Glenn Beck. Followed by Hannity, O'Reilly, and the rest of the Fox News team, plus Rush Limbaugh. Irony much? Yes much.

So, Glenn Beck's perfect Union? Alaska and Tennessee. Wait, wasn't this the same guy who started crying on television about the future of America? Why, yes, yes it is.

The fact is, though, that the Republican Party is better than this crap. The Republican used to stand for something, even if you disagreed with it. Now, they've lost that, ever since they let all the extremists in their party take over. They're are still people who are sensible and Republicans - we just need to see them more. They need to kick out the extremists who pretend to love America (Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, all of Fox News...) and bring in the people who really do. Because saying that America is great but there is room and need for improvement is true patriotism, not denying that anything could possibly be wrong and letting us dig our hole wider. The Republican Party needs to shape up already. All they're doing is alienating the people who REALLY matter in the polls - the independents. Because the Democrats will vote Democratic, and the Republicans will vote Republican. The independents are the toss up.

So come on, guys. Get some better educated people out there, not Palin and Bush. Take out the extremists and the fascist Nazi pigs and the power grabbers, people like Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney (JUST SHUT HIM UP PLEASE), the entire Fox News team, and Mr. I'm-better-because-I'm-black-even-if-I-say-the-same-crap-Steele. Seriously, you can do better.

And you're not even trying to.

Ah, Fox News. You can believe it's owned by the same people who run the Sun, can't you?
But interestingly, the News Corporation also own the Times, which is supposed to be the best newspaper in Britain (and I say that as a Guardian reader, which is lefty, compared to the Times, which is Centre Right but agreeable). Odd, really.

Wouldn't really compare The Sun to Fox - Fox is much more Daily Mail, whereas The Sun is more hilariously harmless.

Who says the Times is the best? I mean, it obviously is, but I'd like to see this poll

Anyway the Times is decent for a number of reasons - the reporting is generally accurate, and bar the actual writers opinion pages (which are always well written anyway) tend to be fairly well balanced, and sometimes contain a little opposing column as well. Oh, and the sports pages are absolutely top quality compared to most other newspapers, which is saying a lot because sports pages are normally tripe. Also also the supplements are for the most part actually interesting, and the Times 2 crossword is decent and fun.

Yeah I'm employed by The Times.

I'd probably read the times or the telegraph. Not too sure of the difference between them.

Rather lovely page about fourteen characteristics of fascism which all existed in all of the following: Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy, Franco's Spain, Suharto's Indonesia, and Pinochet's Chile. And who do they have in common with today? Let's see.
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism – Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
They say an image speaks a thousand words, so here you go:

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights – Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to ‘look the other way’ of even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
The Guantanamo Bay guys, anyone?
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause – The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe; racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists; terrorists, etc.
In this case? All of the above! Republicans have declared war against socialism, communism, liberals, and terrorists!
4. Supremacy of the Military – Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
This is also happening already. Look how much money the army receives in the budget - it's huge!
5. Rampant Sexism – The government if fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.
Republicans are mainly older white males, they oppose abortion, they are against homosexuality and many are homophobes, and they have an anti-gay agenda.
6. Controlled Mass Media – Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or through sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common.
Fox. News.
7. Obsession with National Security – Fear is used as a motivation tool by the government over the masses.
Of course, this is true, too. Look at Dick Cheney on about how Obama is going to cause another attack on American soil.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined – Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.
This is even more true. The majority of Republicans are Christians, many are fundamentalists, and some even support a Christian theocracy and they all talk this garbage about America being a Christian nation despite the Constitution saying that everyone has freedom of religion and the government cannot support one religion over another.
9. Corporate Power is Protected – The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders in power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
Low taxes for the super rich!
10. Labor Power is Suppressed – Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely or are severely suppressed.
More or less, Republicans don't like unions.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts – Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
Republicans don't care much for the arts, we know this, and their disdain for intelligence is more than obvious.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment – Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses, and even forego civil liberties, in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
This, no, not as much.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption – Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions, and who use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability.
HALLIBURTON!
14. Fraudulent Elections – Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against (or even the assassination of) the opposition candidates, the use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and the manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
No, not at all.

I hope.

It is scary that American has taken some fascist steps in response to 9/11, but we are not totalitarianly fascist, yet, although it is scary how the conservative right seem to promote it. If we ever become such, I will relocate to a safer location abroad, and perhaps find the inspiration to write against it.

*high fives Hugh*

Now, as already established, I'm Conservative though moderately so. However, I would never join a political party, but rather remain an independant as parties have their antics and certainly go through ups and downs. There's many third parties I like, as the Constitution Party, however, I would never join or vote as that but rather vote for whatever mainstream party canidate I prefer.

Hm, but don't forget the reason why the BNP got two seats in the European elections was because labour turnout is at an all-time low, as well as overall turnout- the BNP got less votes than last time, but got a higher proportion.

France et all is a bit different.
