Any special reason for that, Arvy?
Part of my next, erm, 'story'. Which, of course, features all of you.

Explains my edit from the other thread, no?
I suspect it is another rant about how humans are destroying nature.

Of course I am, silly Arvy. No offense intended.

Do you mean "features all of your caricatures"?... If not then I humbly request a slightly more accurate portrayal of myself (ie: my ellipsis habits)...

No, I just mean that you guys are in it, not with the exact same personalities. Taylor is still the bad ass leader of our group, and Rot a weapons expert. However, I can't transcribe ellipses into it.

Fine, I'll throw you guys a bone.

The command center was unquestionably high tech and somewhat like Arvy had imagined. Instead of the clich giant room with rows of desks and a huge monitor at the front, similar to the NASA control room from the Apollo Era, there was a semi-circular ring of desks, all connected into one long table, wrapping around a huge stretched softscreen. The softscreen, while curved around to ensure maximum visibility from everyone, was still straight enough to be read, since the desks were spread out over a long space. The semi-circular arrangement ensured maximum utilization of the available space. There were 6 rows of the desks ringing around the softscreen, and each workstation was even better. High tech gadgets the likes of which weren't even in mass production for civilians yet, and huge high res OLED displays for everyone. The softscreen flickered from image to image, radar to radar, showing the oncoming attack in real time. Arvy felt a chill down his back. This was the brain of the operation going on above them, the brains of the army trying to fight the onrush of bombers and soldiers. It looked cold and calculating, bathed in a red light to signify alarm and urgency. The efficiency of the workers here, the officers, and the generals trying to coordinate the fight, was disturbing. They had no idea what was going on up there

But then again, he thought, they did. These men were once soldiers themselves, and had fought against the enemies of their own times once. They knew what it was like to fight and see their comrades die, and to wish against all hope to survive whatever battle they were plunged in. Perhaps they had earned this, to not be in imminent danger anymore. But even then, Arvy felt scared of what was happening down there, sending men to their deaths without being able to actually watch them. To destroy someone with good intentions, and yet not first understand them and repent. To stand on the brink of computers and order men into battle It was a concept he had heard before, in some novel or another. If you were going to destroy someone with good intentions, at least take the time to understand what you're going to be destroying, even if it was for the greater good.

But then again, the people who were being sent to their deaths had volunteered for that And Arvy admired them for it. It took true bravery to be willing to die for people you had never met, people who could potentially hate your guts.

But he didn't think much of bravery, otherwise. What was the point if you died in the end? The point of evolution was not to die, but to procreate and survive. And while soldiers were certainly, in a way, exempt from this, the breeding population was not. It was why in eusocial creatures, coalescences, the warriors were usually sterile - they were expendable all of a sudden. It was also why the warriors fought - because the only way they could ensure their genetic material was passed down was by ensuring that their brothers and sisters, their families, who weren't sterile could survive and procreate. The eusocial way of living was alien to humanity, yet even humans could become as such given enough time and the right circumstances.

Party Thread, a new thread would go inactive fairly soon unless you regularly update it.

Also, quick question, as I couldn't get an answer off of Google: If the world were plunged into a nuclear winter after the launching of at least 100 20 Mt nuclear weapons, and a certain area of the world were to be nuked around four times in 20 years, then how long would it be until the world as well as that area was completely habitable again without any radioactive elements poisoning the food supply or drinking water?
