I assume you live close to the border, 'cause otherwise a day trip to Canada would be insane and pointless.

It also wouldn't be insane if I was on a Christian retreat in Washington state this week and we were going to SFU so that we may practice evangelism... And I just got back... The part of Canada I saw was very beautiful...

The parts of Canada I saw were horrible and barren. Their road system was dismal. The city I stayed in was the epitome of dirty. And if my memory serves me correctly, it wasn't a small city either, but a quite large one.

Next to Jamaica, of course.

Edit: Actually, scratch that. I've never even been to Jamaica. I just heard it was good. I don't even have a favorite place on Earth. If I did it would be right where I am, I suppose.

Constant wind. Unfortunately I left a path of destruction last year. Don't jump up and down on damp planks that are poorly supported on a dock.

Arvy laughed inside at this. Damage the ecosystem People never understood how resilient life was. No matter what catastrophe had struck in the past, as long as some life was left over, it spread and multiplied over and over, forming a new so called "Golden Ages." The most stark example was the Permian extinction. 250 million years ago, run away warming from volcanoes had destabilized gas hydrates, or methane, from the Arctic. It was what was called a positive feedback loop. The warming had melted the ice, releasing methane. The methane had further warmed the atmosphere, releasing more methane, and so on. It had been a catastrophe for life. Oxygen levels dropped to record lows, and the atmosphere became a toxic mixture of carbon dioxide and methane. It was estimated that more than 90% of all life was wiped out - and that was just what we could find in the fossil record. There was no telling how many more countless species that had never been found by man had died out slowly in that Permian concoction.

And yet, life had survived. The Permian extinction led to what was probably the most famous time in the history of life, at least to humans - the reign of the Dinosaurs.

The real problem here was the recovery process for life. And the human effects. Life would recover, yes, but it would take thousands, if not millions, of years to reach the diversity it had before the extinction. Then there were humans. Humans had grown up with these creatures, and it was almost a feeling of regret, that now they had destroyed them. It was the human side of the issue, how could we simply sit back and destroy these creatures that were helpless?

There were two camps to this issue. The first were the ones who wanted to help the creatures to survive, and it was because of them that the pits had been created. The second were self-described realists, and believed that the extinction was happening and we should not meddle in it. Life would again go on to multiply and expand into new regions, and evolve into new forms. Some imagined a world of evolved rats, taking the place of the predators. Rats had always been predators on the fringes of humanity. Humans had never been able to defeat them, resigning only to driving them away for a time. With humans gone, or diminished, and whole niches in the ecosystem abandoned, it was the perfect chance for rats to evolve into predators. The litheness and beauty of the cats replaced with the coldness of the rats

The real issue here was neither of these, though. The problem was the effect on civilization. Scientists were always hesitant to show this side of things. The ecosystems of the world imploding in on themselves and the destruction of the planet always were better sells than the collapse of civilization. Life would rebound, but centuries of knowledge would be lost. Who knew what would replace western civilization. Our greatest innovations, forgotten
