I just finished the pilot episode of the 2005 Dr Who reboot...as someone with no prior experience with this show, and almost zero idea of British culture, I was less then enthralled. I was kind of expecting more wit, less annoying teenage girl sidekick. Does the show get better or is it like that the whole way through?

Oh, it improves. Wit increases and Rose definitely gets much less annoying.

Don't worry. I really, *really* don't enjoy Dr Who too much. To me it seems they improved all the special effects while keeping the camp ass story lines and cheese - I love the old Dr Who because as one big terrible package it works. I don't feel the new ones are much better written, yet since it has the trappings of quality it comes across as shit.

IMO.

Mostly at the start of season 3. When she's replaced with Martha, who's a far better companion for the Doctor.

That's a can of worms

But you'll find that the season starts slow each time (apart from 4, where it was funny from the word go) because of a new companion, or doctor, or whatever. It's worth persevering for the Stephen Moffat episodes in itself, though.

Planet of the Dead, Midnight, Blink, The Waters of Mars, and Planet of the Ood were probably my favorite episodes. Plus, Donna is probably his best companion to date. It's not a love interest sort of thing, and she tries to make him more human and less arrogant, and that's what the Doctor needs. Not some woman fawning over him (or him fawning over Rose).

I'll give it till the end of the first disc then, I can understand a show needing time to get the ball rolling.

They can't all be Firefly dammit.

Damn straight.

I would put the Child in the Fireplace, the Empty Child, and the Impossible Planet above Planet of the dead and Planet of the Ood. Utopia as a stand-alone is also fantastic, Dalek and Age of Steel also high up there.

Which, after showing my parents the first episode, they became hooked on as well. We finally finished Serenity just this last weekend.

But she's also annoying, loud-mouthed, arrogant, and pretentious.
I would put the Child in the Fireplace,
Oh, yeah, I completely forgot about Madame de Pompadour. Twas a fabulous episode indeed.
the Empty Child,
Agreed.
Impossible Planet
I really didn't get the point of the episode. The character of the Devil thing was nice, but beyond that, the Christian imagery just ruined it for me.
above Planet of the dead and Planet of the Ood.
Maybe above Planet of the Dead, but I rather enjoyed Planet of the Ood and disagree.
Utopia as a stand-alone is also fantastic, Dalek and Age of Steel also high up there.
Utopia as a standalone, sure, and Dalek (though I was talking more about the David Tennant episodes), but anything with these wimpy-ass new Cybermen from Cybus Industries is a no for me.

Yes, I definitely chuckled on a few different occasions.

The third episode was rot though so I dunno.
