What's the difference between these different kinds of metal?
Ahem.
Gothic metal - Heavy emphasis on keyboards, and romantic lyrics *Mostly based on the Gothic era of Europe* Ex- Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation
Death metal - Most brutal of all. Growled, grunted, screamed vocals. Very technical musicianship, lyrics focus on gore and satanism *Most of the time* Ex - Necrophagist, Becoming the Archetype *Christian band*
Black metal - Evilest of all. 2nd most brutal, made up of very fast and heavy playing, very high pitched screaming, lyrics deal with satanism and anti-Christian themes *Most of the time* Ex - Immortal, Antestor *Christian band*
Power metal - Epic, clean metal. Music is played fast with a neo-Classical feel. Ex- DragonForce, Rhapsody of Fire
Melodic death metal - Death metal with a more melodic feel, lyrics vary, style originated in Gothenburg, Sweden. Ex- Dark Tranquility, Eternal Tears of Sorrow
Folk Metal - Death, Black, or Melodic death with folkish overtones and lyrics. Bands- Eluveitie, Holy Blood *Christian band*
Pop/Hair/Glam Metal - Metal from the 80s, sex, drugs and rock n' roll lyrics. Bands: Motley Crue, Stryper *Christian Band*
New Wave of British Heavy Metal - A fusion of classic metal and British punk rock. Over the top vocals and lyrics all over the boards as far as theme. Bands: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden
Classic Metal - The original metal bands, the ones that defined metal in the 70s. No general theme. Heavy use of down tuning and blues drumming. Bands Include - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin.
Nu-Metal - Modern fusion of rap and metal. Some would argue that it is not true metal. Heavy use of down tuneing, lyrics tend to be political and/or anti-authority. Bands include - KoRn, Disturbed
Metalcore - Fusion of melodic death metal and hardcore punk. Some would argue that it isn't a true metal genre. Fast guitars, and breakdowns define the genre. Solos are less frequent. Bands include - Killswitch Engage, All That Remains
Symphonic metal - A genre that tends to not be stand alone, but fused with other genres. Examples of this are: Symphonic black metal, symphonic power metal, symphonic thrash metal. Keyboard takes over most of what would be lead guitar parts, except for solos. Bands - Nightwish *Symphonic power metal*, Summoning *Symphonic black metal*
EDIT: YIPE!!! I forgot three.
Thrash Metal - A style of metal that evolved out of New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Played a lot faster than the other styles of metal of the time, with more focus on soloing. Singing isn't as "Good" as other bands. Lyrics have no general theme. Bands include the "Big Four" - *Old* Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer.
Progressive Metal - A style of metal with unusually long songs, odd timing, and almost random changes in the music. Bands include: Dream Theater, Symphony X
Doom Metal - Black Sabbath influenced metal crossed with other, more extreme styles. Slow, heavy, and powerful music. Bands include Agalloch and Paradise Lost.

Favorite to play- Piano
Favorite to hear- Organ (which I plan to learn to play eventually- shouldn't be a lot different than piano. Just need to learn a few nobs, pedals, and multiple keyboards. )
